Nothing quite compares to the feeling of soft sand between your toes or the sound of the swirling ocean. The colors found in the water, sand, sky, and vegetation are warm and inviting. Sitting under your umbrella, skimming through a good book, you feel weightless and trouble free. We believe this feeling of freedom and serenity should grace every home.

Creating spaces that remind us of our beloved travels has become a classic design style. Whether you call it coastal, seaside, or beach-inspired, this spa-inspired look can be achieved using a few key design elements.

Neutral Palette

When working to achieve an easy, breezy vibe, it‘s important to stick with a color palette that transitions seamlessly from room to room.

Greys and whites allow you to weave in pops of coastal-inspired color through fabrics, tile, flooring, and furniture. Lighting, art, and accessories in shades of blue and green are particularly stunning, but be sure you’re not overcrowding your palette. It’s always smart to add, and then edit. In the home above, we applied a neutral backdrop and thoughtfully layered in color through the lamp, drapery, chandelier, and coffee table to keep things grounded.

Statement Lighting

The soft, subtle colors in a coastal design benefit from bursts of bold hues that keep things interesting. By incorporating a mix of trim work, flooring detail, and architectural elements, you craft a tailored and powerfully  curated home.

Approach the topic of texture by asking, “how will each finish add to my home’s story?” In the living room, tongue and groove ceilings use texture to break up a neutral color story. Wide plank floors are custom-stained a perfect driftwood grey which ties back to the ceiling beams. The kitchen has two backsplashes; one a clean white subway tile to highlight the vent hood’s chrome metal strapping, and the other a marble mosaic that runs to the ceiling, drawing the eye up and lending drama to an otherwise simple bar. Wood and iron barn doors crafted from a century’s old local cotton gin lend another interesting dose of texture.
