I visited NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art today and, with only a couple of hours to take it all in, I decided to tour the European Arts wing. I walked into a stunning display of reassembled French homes and chateaus. Every detail, from the elaborate wood paneling to the finely embroidered upholstery felt magical, almost as if you were stepping back in time.

Louis XIV, the Sun King, was one of the most influential kings and responsible for introducing a grandiose sense of opulence and grace to the world. He reigned for 72 years, and during that time, France became the most powerful country in Europe. He surrounded himself with some of the greatest artistic and intellectual figures of his time and one of his many lasting legacies is the Palace of Versailles.

Under his meticulous eye, several lavish châteaux, gardens, schools, and churches were constructed but Versailles stands at the top (and sits on the list of nearly every French tourist). It became the center of government for Louis XIV, who spared no expense ensuring that his demanding taste of gilded objects and fine fabrics and décor would be honored in every room. What a dream it would have been to attend one of Louis XIV’s parties!

I learn so much studying the many ways design has evolved, and walking through these exhibits brought to life how lavish and detailed French style was at the time. I find that the underlying current still influences how we curate for our clients today. You may not be on the market for a home swathed in gold and silk, but you can most definitely respect the exquisite beauty and grace shared through these well-appointed French interiors.

Consider this an invitation to weave a bit of that opulence into your own home, and if you’re looking for a professional who can help pull it all together, drop us a note at www.melaniekingdesigns.com or DM us at @melaniekingdesigns and we can schedule your complimentary consultation.
